Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire have been spotted back in training ahead of Manchester United’s FA Cup clash at Newport County on Sunday.

United travel to the Welsh side for their fourth-round tie, in what will be the first ever meeting of the two clubs.

Though Newport are a League Two side, Erik ten Hag will likely name a strong team for the match given that the FA Cup is the only trophy the Red Devils can realistically win this season.

The manager will be delighted then that two key defenders are back on the training ground and seemingly in contention to play.

Shaw hasn’t played since the 2-0 defeat at West Ham just before Christmas, while Maguire has been sidelined with a groin issue since the Champions League loss to Bayern Munich in December.

Both were expected to be in the matchday squad for the clash with Tottenham last week but failed to be fit in time.

Shaw’s return will be a very welcome sight, given that United do not have any other left-back’s available as Tyrell Malacia is injured and Sergio Reguilon’s loan from Spurs was cut short.

Ten Hag will likely give a full update on the fitness of his squad during his pre-match press conference on Friday, though several players have already been ruled out.

Malacia, Victor Lindelof, Anthony Martial and Mason Mount will miss the Newport clash through injury, while Sofyan Amrabat should still be at the Africa Cup of Nations with his Morocco side close to qualifying for the knockout stages.

Andre Onana could be back should Cameroon fail to make it out of the groups, but if they advance Altay Bayindir could finally make his United debut in-between the sticks.

Following the Newport game, United travel to Wolves in desperate need of a league win, with the club now eighth in the table, 11 points off the top four.
