The trial of Mr. Umar Abubakar, who is facing charges of job racketeering and forgery, has been temporarily stalled after he failed to appear before the Adamawa State High Court in Yola. The case, which has drawn significant public interest, is being prosecuted by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

Mr. Abubakar was arrested by ICPC in a sting operation in 2022. He was formally arraigned on June 1, 2023, before Hon. Justice Hafsat Abdulrahman on a three-count charge, including obtaining by false pretence, fraudulent document creation, and corruptly receiving a benefit in exchange for employment.

According to details presented by ICPC, Mr. Abubakar allegedly deceived one Mr. Kabiru Musa into paying N100,000 by falsely claiming that he had high-level connections in the Presidency that could secure a job at ICPC. To further his deception, he reportedly presented a forged temporary appointment letter, which was purportedly signed by the ICPC Chairman.

At the scheduled hearing on Tuesday, Mr. A.U. Sangere, defence counsel for Mr. Abubakar, informed the court that his client was absent because he had travelled. He assured the court that the defendant would be present at the next sitting.
