Former First Lady Jill Biden has disclosed that former U.S. President Joe Biden will continue living with stage four prostate cancer for the remainder of his life, while remaining active despite the challenges posed by the disease and ongoing treatment.

Speaking during recent media appearances while promoting her memoir, View From the East Wing, Jill Biden said the former president’s cancer had spread to his bones, making it significantly more serious than localized prostate cancer. She explained that although many prostate cancer cases can be successfully treated, metastatic cancer presents a different medical reality requiring long-term management.

According to her, Biden continues to maintain a busy schedule that includes public engagements, meetings and travel, but the illness and medications have slowed him down. She noted that the combination of stage four cancer, treatment-related side effects and advancing age has made daily life more difficult for the 83-year-old former president.

Jill Biden also revealed that concerns about persistent urinary symptoms eventually led to further medical examinations after the couple left the White House. Those examinations resulted in the diagnosis of aggressive prostate cancer that had already metastasized to the bones.

Medical experts have previously noted that while metastatic prostate cancer is generally considered incurable, advances in treatment can help many patients manage the disease for years and maintain an active quality of life. Biden’s cancer has been described as hormone-sensitive, a factor that can improve treatment options and disease management.

The former president was first diagnosed with the aggressive form of prostate cancer in 2025. Since leaving office, he has continued to make occasional public appearances while undergoing treatment and participating in Democratic Party activities.
