Tottenham were beaten by Liverpool in north London on Sunday, but Jamie Carragher has pointed the finger at their players rather than manager Antonio Conte.

A first half Mohamed Salah brace put the Reds in control and despite a second half rally from Spurs and a Harry Kane goal, the visitors held on for a 2-1 victory.

It was the same story as many Tottenham games this season, in that they were poor in the first half but much better after the break.

Conte has been criticised for seemingly negative tactics, hampered this weekend by Son Heung-Min and Richarlison being out injured, while Dejan Kulusevski was only fit enough to come off the bench.

Carragher feels the Italian should not be blamed for his defensive-minded style of play as that is what he is known for and nothing else can really be expected of him.

Instead, he feels goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and the Tottenham defence are not good enough to play Conte’s style and that is what is causing problems for them, while if fans do not like the Italian’s tactics, they should blame chairman Daniel Levy.

‘Antonio Conte won’t change, he has had great success in his career with his system/tactics. You know what you’re getting before he comes, so blame Levy if you’re not happy,’ Carragher tweeted.

‘Got Spurs top four, last 16 Champions League and in the top four right now. Defenders and keeper are not at the level he needs.’

Spurs started with three centre-backs – Eric Dier, Clement Lenglet and Ben Davies – with Emerson Royal and Ryan Sessegnon at wing-back.

While Carragher did not name names in criticising the defenders, Dier made a bad mistake to play in Salah for his second goal, while Emerson Royal continues to turn in really awful performances.
