In a heart-wrenching incident, 19-year-old Faith Opesusi Timileyin, an aspiring Microbiology student, has reportedly taken her own life after receiving a disappointing score in the 2025 Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination. The tragedy has sent shockwaves across Nigeria, raising concerns over the emotional impact of examination results on young students.

Faith, who had previously achieved a high score in the 2024 JAMB exam, was devastated after receiving a score of 146 in this year’s examination. According to her father, Mr. Opesusi Oluwafemi, Faith was distraught and unable to cope with the disappointment. He expressed regret that she did not open up about her feelings, noting that if she had, the family could have consoled and reassured her.

Faith’s elder sister, Opeyemi Opesusi, described her as a hardworking and honest young woman who always spoke her mind. She revealed that Faith had admitted to ingesting a poisonous substance before she was rushed to the hospital, where she eventually passed away. The family has now laid her to rest in Ikorodu, Lagos, but they remain in shock and grief.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has acknowledged widespread errors in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), which saw over 50% of candidates scoring below 200. Following a public outcry over alleged glitches, JAMB Registrar Prof. Ishaq Oloyede admitted that technical issues had affected the examination, apologizing to affected students and promising corrective measures.

In a statement, JAMB announced that 379,997 candidates will have the opportunity to retake the UTME exam to address the identified issues. The board has assured the public of its commitment to transparency and fairness, while many parents and stakeholders continue to question the reliability of the examination process.

This tragic incident has reignited the debate on the emotional and psychological support available for students facing academic pressure. For Faith’s family, the loss is an unimaginable tragedy that they must now come to terms with.
