The Independent Candidacy Bill being sponsored by the senator representing Benue South Senatorial District and Senate Minority Leader, Comrade Abba Moro PhD, on Thursday, passed First Reading on the floor of the senate.

The Bill seeks to, among other things; Make provisions for Independent Candidacy in the electoral process in Nigeria.

To create a platform for credible and eligible candidates desirous to participate in the electoral process in the country to so do without sponsorship of a political party.

To make provisions that allow anyone who’s eligible to stand for election to any political office as an independent candidate.

The Bill, if passed into law, will address the worry of eligible aspirants for political offices who have no platform to run or unjustly denied party tickets.

Recall that Senator Moro introduced the bill in the 9th Senate but could not scale through the legislative processes for presidential assent before the expiration of that senate, hence the re-introduction in the 10th Senate.
