The Foundation for Environmental Rights Advocacy and Development (FENRAD), a foremost environmental justice campaigner and public accountability watchdog, expresses deep concern over the persistent increase in the pump price of petroleum products and the resulting inflationary pressures currently gripping Nigeria’s economy.
FENRAD notes with alarm that the continuous rise in fuel prices has triggered a cascading effect on the cost of living, exacerbating poverty levels and placing unbearable strain on vulnerable populations, including women, children, low-income earners, and rural dwellers. The organization emphasizes that the multiplier effect of increased transportation costs has significantly driven up the prices of essential goods and services, further shrinking the purchasing power of ordinary Nigerians.
The organization decries the widening inequality gap, as those already on the margins of society bear the heaviest burden of these economic shocks. FENRAD stresses that without urgent and targeted interventions, the situation may deteriorate into a deeper humanitarian and socio-economic crisis.
In light of these developments, FENRAD calls on the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to take immediate and decisive action to address the ongoing hardship.
Specifically, the organization urges: Immediate intervention measures to stabilize fuel prices and curb the spiraling inflation affecting basic commodities. Swift implementation of mitigating policies following the removal of fuel subsidy, ensuring that the intended relief mechanisms effectively reach vulnerable communities.
Provision of targeted social protection programs, including transportation subsidies, food support schemes, and direct cash transfers to cushion the adverse impacts on the poor.
Transparent and accountable management of resources accrued from subsidy removal to rebuild public trust and ensure equitable development.
