The Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, has charged Nigerian lawyers to uphold integrity, truth, and professional consistency, stressing that their conduct shapes public perception of the legal profession.
Dr. Aliyu gave the charge on Friday when he received the Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Gwagwalada Branch, Barr. Owhor Clever N., Esq., and his executive team during a courtesy visit to the ICPC headquarters in Abuja.
The ICPC Chairman underscored the importance of mentorship in grooming the next generation of lawyers, urging senior practitioners to lead by example.
“It is important that young lawyers begin their careers under the guidance of seniors who possess unquestionable integrity. As senior practitioners, we must lead by example and ensure that what we pass on can stand the test of time,” he said.
Warning against inconsistency in legal positions, Dr. Aliyu added, “If you argue today that white is white, tomorrow you should not argue that white is green or black. The public watches us closely, and inconsistency undermines the profession.”
Earlier, Barr. Clever explained that the visit aimed to foster collaboration with the ICPC in anti-corruption and integrity training for NBA members, contributing articles to the branch’s journals, and partnering on its Legal Week and other programmes. He further revealed plans to dedicate the next edition of the branch’s journal to honour Dr. Aliyu for his contributions to the anti-corruption fight.
On behalf of the branch, the NBA Gwagwalada Chairman presented Dr. Aliyu with an Award of Excellence in recognition of his leadership achievements.
Dr. Aliyu welcomed the proposals and assured the branch of the Commission’s readiness to partner on the outlined initiatives and other mutually beneficial projects.
