Having a successful year depends on peace – Our Security, Our Peace by Prof. O.E Bassey

This year, let peace be the compass that guides your decisions. When you feel overwhelmed, choose calmness. When conflict arises, choose understanding. When faced with fear, choose faith. Let peace be the thread that weaves your goals into reality, and you’ll find that success isn’t just about what you achieve, but how you feel while achieving it.

With day 6 of the year 2025 already in, it’s commonplace and easy to focus on goals, ambitions, and milestones and inadvertently leave out the role peace plays in bringing about fulfilment of our aspirations. In every achievement lies an often-overlooked truth:

peace, which is the foundation upon which success is built. Be it in family, relationships, spirituality, career, or business, nothing meaningful thrives in the absence of harmony.

Right from the home, peace creates an environment where love and understanding can bloom. Take for instance, coming home after a long day to find the warmth of calmness pervasive, it has its way of bringing about joy that gives you wings to fly and become whoever you choose to be. This does not take away the fact that disputes and misunderstandings will always try to sneak in here and there – that is life – but with a culture of peace intentionally cultivated in the home, you tend to prioritise connection over being right. When a family functions in harmony, everyone feels seen and supported, with that shared strength spilling over into every other part of lif In relationships outside family, peace is yet the bridge that sustains them like water does to plants. Think of how many connections falter, not because of a lack of love, but because unresolved issues pile up like barriers. But when peace is deliberately chosen, it means you are learning to listen more than you speak, and it ensures you place empathy at the heart of every conversation.

Also down to the workplace, creativity and productivity which are two huge parts of every work environment, would only come to life where peace reigns. If an office is a hub where you are always found in constant battle or drama, your mind will be too preoccupied to dream big or think clearly. But with a peaceful work environment comes clarity to solve problems, the courage to take bold steps, and the confidence to build connections that matter to your short-term and long-term dreams. And all these aren’trocket-science, it is all about you being intentional with your words, staying calm in the face of challenges, and refusing to let negativity dictate your moves regardless of whatever comes at you or your team. Be the positive one, be the peacemaker.

Same thing applies in business, if you are a business person, peace isn’t just a strategy therein; it’s the glue that holds both short term and long-term success together. I will give you an instance: when you have business partners to seal deals with, trust is that wheel that makes it possible. If within you, you lack harmony, if your tendencies are anti-peace like, if you are violent or aggressive in communication patterns, chances are that you will most likely lose lots of business partners, and consequently, see your business go down the drain. This also is consequential on a broader scale within your organisation, peace strengthens relationships with employees, customers, and stakeholders. It ensures that the work environment is conducive for creativity and innovation to thrive which in turn leads to increased productivity and satisfaction. If you, however, have a work environment stuffed with strife, this can lead to disengagement, high turnover rates, and a tarnished reputation that discourage potential clients from dealing with you.
