Bayern went into the knockout stage as one of the favourites to win the competition but they looked anything but potential champions in Rome.
Thomas Tuchel’s side failed to register a single shot on target in a game for the first time in five years as they lost the first-leg of a UCL last 16 tie for the first time in 11 seasons.
Ciro Immobile’s 69th penalty was enough to give Lazio the win, with Dayot Upamecano sent off for the visitors after giving away the spot-kick.
Kane himself missed a sitter from just a few yards out in the early minutes of thematch, an uncharacteristic mistake from the England captain who had scored 28 goals in as many games this season prior to tonight.
The striker was hoping to score his 50th Champions League goal but was forced to reflect on yet another poor performance which followed Bayern’s humiliating defeat at title rivals Bayer Leverkusen last weekend.
‘Really tough week. In the first half we started well and had clear chances, one for myself. In these games they’re big moments,’ the 30-year-old told TNT Sports.
‘The second half was disappointing. We came out with less energy and less confidence. Too many balls given away. We got punished. Once you go down to 10 men it’s always difficult.
‘We have to find it among ourselves. We’re still in the race for the Bundesliga and in this tie. We have to keep fighting.
‘We’re in a difficult spell. We have to fight. We have to turn it round. We have big games and big things to fight for.
‘We’re not out of it, we will never give up. We just need to turn it around. One game or spark can turn it round.’
Kane left Tottenham for Bayern last summer in a deal worth around £100million, with the sole aim of finally winning a trophy.
Amazingly, that dream may not even come true this season, with Bayern five points behind Leverkusen in the Bundesliga, out of the German Cup after losing to a third-tier side, and now their Champions League hopes are in peril.
As Kane says though, the German giants will have the chance to win the tie on Match 5th when they host Lazio in the second-leg.
