Violence erupted in Essa-Oke, a town in Obokun Local Government Area of Osun State, following the controversial appointment of Timileyin Ajayi as the Olojudo of Ido Ayegunle. Local residents have vehemently rejected Ajayi’s appointment, insisting that their district head should have been promoted instead.
Tensions escalated on Monday when armed assailants descended upon the town, opening fire and leading to multiple casualties. Reports indicate that several individuals have been killed, while many others sustained injuries. Disturbing images circulating on social media depict masked men dressed in black arriving in multiple 18-seater buses, raising fears of further violence.
A concerned resident expressed their distress on social media, suggesting that the state government should consider declaring a state of emergency in Esa-Oke or deploy adequate security forces to the area. “What we are witnessing now might be a child’s play compared to what is to come,” the resident stated.
Efforts to obtain a comment from the Osun police command have been unsuccessful, as spokesperson Yemisi Opalola did not respond to inquiries.
