Former United Kingdom ambassador to the United States, Peter Mandelson, has been arrested in London as part of an expanding investigation into his alleged links with the late financier Jeffrey Epstein, British authorities confirmed on Monday.

In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said officers arrested a 72-year-old man on suspicion of misconduct in public office following search warrants carried out at two properties in Wiltshire and the Camden area of London. While police did not initially release the suspect’s name, multiple British media outlets identified the individual as Mandelson.

Epstein, a wealthy and well-connected financier, died in a New York jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges. His case has continued to reverberate through political, financial, and royal circles years after his death.

Mandelson, a long-standing Labour Party figure and former UK business secretary, is alleged to have shared market-sensitive information with Epstein during his time in government. The claims gained renewed attention following the recent release of additional U.S. Justice Department files connected to Epstein.

Earlier this month, Mandelson resigned from the Labour Party and stepped down from the House of Lords. He had already been removed from his ambassadorial post in September by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, after earlier disclosures revealed a handwritten note in which Mandelson referred to Epstein as “my best pal.”

The arrest comes amid growing scrutiny of Epstein’s associates. Last week, Prince Andrew was also arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office, over allegations that he shared sensitive information with Epstein during his tenure as a UK trade envoy.

British authorities emphasized that investigations remain ongoing and that no formal charges have yet been announced. Mandelson is expected to face further questioning as detectives examine whether his relationship with Epstein breached the obligations and limits of public office.

The latest developments mark a significant escalation in the legal and political fallout surrounding Epstein’s network, as senior figures in the United Kingdom face renewed and direct criminal scrutiny.
