🔴 Breaking News:

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned former Governor of Abia State, Theodore Ahamefule Orji, along with his son, Engr. Chinedum Orji, and three others before Justice Lilian Abai of the Federal High Court in Umuahia. The five defendants face a sixteen-count charge that includes conspiracy, official corruption, stealing, and diversion of public funds amounting to N60.85 billion.

The charges stem from alleged actions taken between 2011 and 2015, wherein the defendants are accused of misappropriating funds allocated to the Abia State Government, specifically security votes and Paris Club refunds. One particular charge outlines that they stole N22.5 billion meant for security, while another accuses them of conspiring to misappropriate N12 billion from the Paris Club Refund.

All defendants pleaded not guilty when the charges were read, prompting the prosecution to request a trial date. Counsel for each defendant applied for bail, arguing for their clients’ right to stand trial without undue detention. In response, Justice Abai granted each defendant bail set at N50 million, requiring them to provide a surety with equivalent financial standing and to deposit their international passports with the court.

The court has scheduled the commencement of the trial for June 18 and 19, 2025. This case highlights ongoing efforts by the EFCC to tackle corruption and financial mismanagement within the Nigerian political landscape.
