Sergio Reguilon was struggling with illness, confirmed Erik ten Hag, explaining the Spaniard’s substitution during Manchester United’s win at Burnley on Saturday night.

The Red Devils won a tight match 1-0 thanks to a stunning Bruno Fernandes volley shortly before half-time, ending a three-match losing streak for Ten Hag’s side.

Part of United’s problems of late have been injuries, with a string of first team stars sidelined, notably in defence.

Jonny Evans started his first game for Manchester United since 2015 after his surprise return to the club over the summer, alongside Victor Lindelof at centre-back, with Diogo Dalot on the right and Reguilon at left-back.

There was concern for Reguilon in the second half when he appeared to suffer an injury and he was substituted, replaced by Raphael Varane 79 minutes in.

Asked about the Spaniard’s fitness, Ten Hag revealed that the full-back was actually struggling with illness and had been before the game, but battled through it, desperate to play the match.

‘Reguilon was ill,’ Ten Hag told TNT Sports. ‘That tells something about character and spirit they want to show.

‘He was ill but wanted to play, wanted to support and contribute for the team.’

United now face back-to-back games against Crystal Palace, firstly on Tuesday in the EFL Cup followed by Saturday in the Premier League, both at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag will be hoping Reguilon does not remain under the weather for long, with Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia still out injured and options at left-back extremely limited.
