A Civil Society Group, Progressive Youths For Anti-Stolen Votes, has asked the National Assembly to hasten the enactment of a law that would provide jail terms for anybody caught stealing votes or indulging in over-voting cases.
The group also asked the National Assembly to do everything necessary to support the judiciary in fighting stolen votes which is a violation of the electoral process.
The Chairman of the Association, Muhammad Muhammad Dawakin Kudu made the call while briefing journalists at the Nigeria Union of Journalists Centre Kano.
He said it is very pertinent to note that lack of rules hurts national development and kills the nation’s democracy, saying all hands must be on deck to achieve the set objectives.
Muhammad, who referred to the NNPP, whose votes were allegedly deducted, said the culprits should have faced the wrath of the laws to serve as a deterrent to others.
He noted that “the State Elections Tribunal deducted the uncertified 165,663 votes without stamps, signing and dates and described it as invalid and unlawful votes considering the manual of INEC elections which states clearly that valid votes must be stamped, signed and dated”.
The Group urged Kano residents to continue to be peaceful in their undertakings and shun anything that would lead to violence and destruction of human lives and properties.
