The Ekiti State Government has disclosed that 90 people were arrested and prosecuted for violating environmental sanitation laws during the July edition of the state-wide sanitation exercise.
Commissioner for Environment, Mrs Tosin Aluko-Ajisafe, made this known while addressing the press in Ado-Ekiti.
She explained that the offenders were apprehended by the sanitation enforcement team at various locations and subsequently transported from the Okesa axis to the Fasuyi area for prosecution.
Aluko-Ajisafe expressed displeasure over attempts by some commercial drivers to obstruct the officials during the enforcement operation.
She cautioned motorists, tricycle and motorcycle operators against unnecessary movement during the monthly exercise, stressing that such actions jeopardize the effectiveness of the programme.
“The monthly sanitation exercise is aimed at improving public health and maintaining a clean environment. We urge union leaders to sensitize their members to comply with the law rather than confront officers carrying out their legitimate duties,” she stated.
The commissioner appealed for greater cooperation from transport operators and residents alike, adding that the government remains committed to enforcing environmental regulations across the state.
