Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, has applauded Governor Monday Okpebholo for intensifying efforts to combat cultism across the state.
The union described the ongoing clampdown as a vital move aimed at restoring law and order, as well as safeguarding the lives and property of citizens.
This commendation was contained in a communique released following the council’s monthly congress, which took place at the NUJ secretariat in Benin City.
According to the communique, “the congress also lauded the State government’s commitment to curbing cultism and urged that the momentum be sustained to guarantee lasting peace and sanity in Edo communities.”
The council also raised concerns about the conduct of some youth leaders, locally known as Okaigheles, who are alleged to be collecting excessive charges from land developers under the pretext of community development initiatives.
The NUJ warned that such actions could deter prospective investors and hinder the state government’s broader goals for urban growth and infrastructural advancement.
