From Dispatch Room
The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji (AMBO), has paid tribute to the heroes of Nigeria’s democratic struggle while raising concerns over governance, infrastructure delivery and public spending in Osun State.
In a Democracy Day statement issued on June 12, Oyebamiji described June 12 as a defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic history and a symbol of the sacrifices made by patriots who fought against military rule and for democratic governance.
The APC candidate honoured those who lost their lives during the struggle for democracy and commended surviving pro-democracy activists for their contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development.
Oyebamiji also congratulated Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing him as one of the leading figures of the June 12 movement and a key contributor to Nigeria’s democratic evolution.
While celebrating Democracy Day, the APC governorship candidate expressed concern about what he described as the failure of the Osun State Government to adequately translate increased federal allocations into visible improvements in the welfare of citizens.
He alleged that despite substantial revenues accruing to the state in recent years, many residents continue to face challenges in education, healthcare and infrastructure.
According to Oyebamiji, public schools across the state require greater attention, while healthcare facilities need improved staffing and access to essential medical supplies.
The APC candidate criticised the state government’s approach to infrastructure development, arguing that major public projects should be awarded to companies with proven technical expertise and relevant experience.
He specifically questioned the award of the Ede Airport project, reportedly valued at ₦99.5 billion, to a company he claimed lacks a known track record in large-scale civil engineering projects.
Oyebamiji said infrastructure projects of strategic importance should be handled by firms with demonstrated competence and capacity to deliver quality outcomes that can stand the test of time.
He pledged that if elected governor, his administration would implement a comprehensive infrastructure renewal programme focused on quality, accountability and equitable development across the state.
The APC candidate also promised to revive the Aviation City Project in Ido-Osun, describing it as a major economic initiative capable of attracting investment, creating jobs and stimulating economic growth.
On youth development, Oyebamiji pledged to prioritise quality education, vocational training, technology-driven learning, entrepreneurship support and skills acquisition programmes aimed at preparing young people for the modern economy.
He further promised to deploy technology-driven security initiatives to improve the protection of lives and property across Osun State.
Oyebamiji also pledged transparency and accountability in public finance management, stating that his administration would ensure prudent use of public resources and provide regular accountability to citizens.
The APC governorship candidate concluded by urging residents of Osun State to remain committed to democratic values and continue demanding transparency, accountability and people-oriented governance from elected officials.
