Chelsea star Ian Maatsen has told the club that he wants to join Borussia Dortmund on a permanent deal this summer, according to reports.

The left-back joined Dortmund on loan in the January transfer window and the German side are thought to be desperate to keep him at the Westfalenstadion.

Maatsen scored his first-ever Champions League goal this week as Dortmund reached the semi-finals with Blues fans urging Chelsea not to offload him.

Speaking after the match, Maatsen said he was intent on becoming a regular at Chelsea before his loan move to Bundesliga giants Dortmund.

Things have now changed, though, and Maatsen now wants to sign for Dortmund permanently with the Dutchman ‘very comfortable’ at his loan club.

That’s according to fresh reports in Germany which have claimed that Maatsen has a release clause of €35-40m.

Maatsen spent last season on loan at Burnley, helping Vincent Kompany’s side secure a league title as he was named in the Championship Team of the Season.

Chelsea wanted to sell Maatsen last summer and even accepted a £31.5m bid from Burnley before he snubbed a permanent switch to Turf Moor.

The west Londoners were again open to a sale in January but Maatsen ended up moving to Dortmund on loan.

Maatsen, who has made 17 appearances for Dortmund to date, looks finally set to move on at the end of the season should a deal be agreed with Chelsea.

‘I always believed [I could] play for Chelsea but unfortunately for some reason it didn’t work out how it should’ve,’ Maatsen told CBS Sports this week.

‘Now I’m here I’m very grateful for the opportunity. I can say I’m very proud of myself.

‘I kept believing in myself and came here to experience playing my game at the highest level, playing my game. Today I think I showed a very good performance. I’m very happy.’
