The Senate has asked the Federal Government to increase investments in sports development throughout the country.

The announcement followed the recent CAF awards, which saw Nigerian athletes win multiple honours.

Senator Sumalia Kawu, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports Development, said on Wednesday in Abuja that the awards were “bold and big statements made on behalf of Nigeria by the winners.”

He said, “It is a wakeup call for government to invest more in sports and to pull the private sector more into it.”

Newspot reports that Victor Osimhen and Asisat Oshoala were named African Player of the Year in the men’s and women’s categories, respectively.

Chiamaka Nnadozie was named Best Keeper of the Year, and the Super Falcons were named Best Women’s National Team.

Kawu commended President Bola Tinubu, Sports Minister John Enoh, and the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, on the achievements of Nigerians at the awards.

He praised the development as a “new dawn” for sports in the country under Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda.
