One does not need to be a professor before one can rightly be described as a distinguished scholar. Some individuals earn that honour through the depth of their intellect, the strength of their character, and their lifelong commitment to humanity. Such a man is Sir Lawrence Mofoluwaso Olamiti.

As we celebrate his 74th birthday today, November 30, 2025, it is only fitting to acknowledge the remarkable imprint he has left on education, journalism, and public service in Nigeria.

Sir Lawrence Olamiti stands tall among the intellectually outstanding figures of his generation, distinguished not only by brilliance but also by uncommon humility and deep respect for humanity.

My personal encounter with him dates back to 1970, when he taught at Molusi College, Ijebu-Igbo, during my formative years as his student. Even then, his passion for knowledge, discipline, and excellence was unmistakable.

A trailblazer in every sense, he wore many hats with distinction — an exceptional teacher, a seasoned journalist, an editor at Tribune Newspapers, a writer known for clarity of expression and attention to detail, and a communicator par excellence at both public and social gatherings.

A product of excellence himself, he imbibed the virtues of diligence, integrity, and intellectual curiosity, values he transmitted to his students with infectious enthusiasm. His teaching style, much like that of a master craftsman, sharpened young minds and instilled confidence that endured far beyond the classroom.

His transition into journalism proved equally impactful. Rising through the ranks, he became one of the respected editors of Tribune Newspapers, one of Nigeria’s most widely circulated newspaper chains. His editorial voice reflected balance, courage, and responsibility — qualities that earned him wide professional respect.

Later, his experience and credibility attracted national service when he became the publicity voice of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), where he championed transparency, accountability, and good governance.

Beyond the newsroom and classroom, Sir Lawrence Olamiti’s life has been firmly anchored in faith. His elevation to knighthood within the Anglican Communion stands as a testament to his moral uprightness, spiritual devotion, and lifelong service to humanity.

Today, we celebrate not merely his age, but a life defined by purpose, discipline, and impact. His journey affirms the transformative power of education and the enduring influence one committed individual can have on generations.

I therefore join family, friends, former students, and admirers across the world in wishing him many more years of good health, joy, and continued inspiration.
