The army said the operation followed intelligence that more than 100 Boko Haram fighters had gathered in the area to launch attacks on nearby communities and transport supplies to their strongholds.

“Acting on this intelligence, troops, in collaboration with the Civilian Joint Task Force, CJTF, and local vigilantes, intercepted the terrorists around noon,” the Nigerian Army said in a statement on Sunday. “A firefight ensued, during which the terrorists attempted a rear-flanking attack, but troops responded effectively, dominating the engagement.”

Subsequent operations in the forest confirmed the deaths of 21 terrorists, with others believed to have fled with gunshot injuries. Items recovered included bicycles, assorted food, clothing, drugs, medical supplies, torchlights, and various weapons and ammunition.
