The  recent election of Rt Revd Cherry Vann on Wednesday, 30th July, 2025 as the Archbishop Primate of the Church of Wales has further polarized and deepened the crisis unity rocking the Anglican Communion world wide.

Those who believed in same sex are relentlessly and crazily pushing their ideology against those who believe faithfully in the biblical ethics as regards sanctity in marriage.

This issue of homosexuality surfaced during the tenure of Justin Welby the archbishop of Canterbury in the Church of England from 2013 to 2025 that forced some groups in the Anglican Communion to break away and formed Global Fellowship of Confessing Anglicans (branded as GAFCON is a communion of “faithful Anglican churches, aligned with the Confessing Movement, that formed in 2008 in response to ongoing theological disputes .

While Mbanda described the election as “another painful nail in the coffin of Anglican orthodoxy,” Ndukuba saw it
as “a further indication and abandonment of the faith once delivered to the saints”.

Mbanda’s letter, addressed to the “Gafcon family,” expressed a “heavy heart” over the events in Wales, stating that by celebrating the election and Vann’s “immoral same-sex relationship,” the Canterbury Communion had again bowed to worldly pressure.

The Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion strongly condemned the election of the Rt. Rev. Vann, a known practising homosexual, on Wednesday, 30th July, 2025 as Archbishop of Wales in a statement signed by the Primate of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), The Most Rev’d Henry C. Ndukuba.

The Church  unequivocally rejected and vowed not to recognize the election of Rt. Rev. Vann as Archbishop of Wales. The statement stressed that the Church of Nigeria would continue to strive to uphold the authority of the Scriptures, its historic creeds, evangelism and holy Christian living.

The Church emphasized that aside being a further authentication of the choice of the Church of Wales walking away from the truth, that it was a signal that some sections of the global Anglican world had resolved to abandon the truth of God’s word by sacrificing the authority of the Scripture for a postmodern agenda that had no divine backing.

“What is at stake in the election of Bishop Vann as Archbishop of Wales are: salvation of the souls of men, biblical ethics, identity of Anglicans globally, impairment of our credibility to do missions and evangelism, and salvaging the very soul of Anglican orthodoxy.”

“We call upon faithful Christians of the Anglican fold to denounce, reject, condemn and expel the rebels in our midst, while we realign ourselves with Anglican remnants scattered in troubled dioceses all over the world, under the umbrella of faithful Anglican Christian bodies like GAFCON.”

Cherry Vann who has served as the Bishop of Monmouth for the past five years, was chosen as the 15th Archbishop of Wales. She is to succeed Bishop Andrew John who retired in July after three and a half years as the leader of the Church in Wales.

Archbishop Cherry was elected having secured a two-thirds majority vote from members of the Electoral College on the 30th day of July, 2025 at its meeting at the St Pierre Church and Hotel in Chepstow.
