Tottenham have no fears of losing Ange Postecoglou when the Liverpool job becomes available this summer despite the Australian having supported the Reds as a kid.

On Friday, Jurgen Klopp made the shock announcement that he would be stepping down as manager at the end of the season citing a lack of energy as the reason.

Already the rumour mill has gone into overdrive speculating on who might succeed Klopp in the Liverpool hotseat.

Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso is an early frontrunner, having guided his side to the top of the Bundesliga table, while the likes of Julian Nagelsmann and Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi will also be in the frame.

Postecoglou is another manager who is likely to have admirers at Liverpool, though football.london are reporting that Spurs fans have no reason to fear losing their manager.

Although the Aussie was a big Liverpool fan growing up, he is happy and settled in north London and has little desire to begin a new challenge.

Moreover, he is described as someone who is very loyal – particularly to those who have taken a chance on him – and has a desire to reward Spurs’ faith by winning silverware.

Although Spurs exited the FA Cup at the hands of Manchester City on Friday night, Tottenham’s hierarchy have been hugely impressed with Postecoglou’s impact on and off the pitch and will resist any approaches.

Postecoglou spoke about his appreciation of Liverpool back in September before a 2-1 win over the Merseysiders, saying: ‘I had a couple of mates who went the United way so I went with Liverpool to make it interesting.

‘Like any kid, I had the posters up on the wall. Liverpool was my team, but you grow up, things change. I used to love Happy Days. But I don’t have posters of The Fonz on my wall now. That’s how it goes.’

Reacting to news of Klopp’s exit, Postecoglou said: ‘I guess I was as surprised as anyone else because he’s a top manager and they are flying at the moment. But also understanding at the back of my mind that probably all of us who have been in the game a while, it’s the constant thought in your heads because you know how much you need to put into the position.

‘He’s probably one of the unique ones, he’s an outstanding manager, world class. He will go down as one of the best, but when you do that at one club for so long that is the uniqueness of it, you have to rebuild teams all the time within the same context.

‘It is totally understandable, my only wish is he does stay out of the game a little while for a couple of reasons, the obvious one about the competitiveness but also it gives me a bit of hope that when I call it a day I am not going to get the urge to come back too quickly.’
