In what appears to be one of the most generous political gestures ahead of the 2025 Eid-el-Kabir celebration, the Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) and frontline APC governorship aspirant in Osun State, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji (AMBO), has distributed ₦200 million, 40 cows, 350 rams, and 1,000 bags of 50kg rice across the state.

The distributions were made to a wide range of beneficiaries including members of the APC Elder Council (Igbimo Agba), APC State and Local Government Executives, ward party members, market leaders (Iyalojas), Muslim clerics, and community stakeholders. According to party sources, each of Osun’s 332 wards received ₦150,000, while each Local Government Elder Committee and Executive got ₦200,000.

While many recipients have lauded AMBO’s largesse as timely and generous during the festive season, concerned observers are raising eyebrows over the legality and ethics of such a massive financial disbursement by a serving head of a federal agency—especially as he remains a declared gubernatorial aspirant.

Critics question how a high-ranking federal appointee is able to freely distribute such vast resources without attracting scrutiny from Nigeria’s anti-corruption agencies or regulatory watchdogs. “This raises serious questions of transparency, potential abuse of office, and use of state-linked influence to gain political mileage,” one civic advocate in Osogbo told Newspot Nigeria under condition of anonymity.

The silence of accountability institutions such as the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB), EFCC, and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has only added to public suspicion. Many argue that such political philanthropy, especially coming from an appointee of the federal government, should attract the same standards of oversight applied to electoral campaign financing and public service conduct.

As the Osun 2026 election season begins to heat up, political observers warn that unchecked political generosity could dangerously blur the lines between public office, campaign strategy, and patronage politics.

Newspot Nigeria will continue to monitor developments as the conversation around governance ethics and public accountability in Nigeria gains renewed urgency.
