To push toward safer and more coordinated transportation, the Akwa Ibom State Government has rolled out a comprehensive Biometric Capturing System for tricycles (Keke) and mini-buses across the state.
The initiative, driven by Governor Pastor Umo Eno, PhD, through the Ministry of Transport (MOT), marks one of the most ambitious digital security reforms in the state’s transportation sector.
According to the Ministry, the new system introduces standardized registration, where all commercial operators are assigned a unique alpha-numeric biometric number tied to their verified identity. Each vehicle will also receive a Security QR Code Sticker, enabling instant verification, improved traceability, and fast response in emergencies.
Officials say the reform is designed to enhance road safety, strengthen law-enforcement capability, and rebuild public confidence in the reliability of the transport system. With thousands of commuters relying on tricycles and mini-buses daily, the government believes that the measure will greatly reduce impersonation, unregistered operators, and transport-related crimes.
Residents and transport operators are already being mobilized for phase-by-phase capturing, with field teams deployed across designated centers in the state.
The biometric project is one of several innovations under Governor Umo Eno’s ARISE Agenda, which aims to modernize public systems, improve service delivery, and boost security across sectors.
The MOT has assured that more updates will be unveiled in the coming weeks as the state intensifies its drive to redefine transportation with technology.
