The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, is now at risk of imprisonment following allegations of disobeying a court order. Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has initiated contempt proceedings against the Senate, resulting in the issuance of Form 48 by the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The court order, stemming from suit No: FHC/ABJ/CS/384/2025, names Senator Akpabio, the Clerk of the National Assembly, and Senator Neda Imasuem, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Code of Conduct, as defendants. The court issued a notice of disobedience on March 4, 2025, after the defendants allegedly failed to comply with a prior directive from Justice O.A. Egwuatu.

The court emphasized that the defendants had been duly served with the order on March 5, 2025, yet chose to disregard it, which could lead to contempt charges and potential imprisonment. The Form 48 details the consequences of such disobedience, underscoring the seriousness of the matter.

The original court order, sought by Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, included requests for the Senate’s investigation into alleged misconduct against her to be halted until the matter is resolved. The court also aimed to ensure that any actions taken during this legal process would be rendered null and void.

This developing situation highlights the ongoing tensions within the Nigerian Senate and raises questions about adherence to judicial authority. With potential jail time looming, the stakes are high for Senate leadership and legislative integrity. As the proceedings unfold, the implications for the Senate and its members will be closely watched.
