United States President Donald Trump will not attend the United States men’s national team’s opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio set to lead the official American delegation instead.

The decision means Trump will be absent from the USA’s opening fixture against Paraguay in Los Angeles, despite the tournament being hosted jointly by the United States, Mexico and Canada. The White House has not provided an official explanation for the president’s absence.

According to the U.S. State Department, Rubio will travel to Los Angeles from June 12 to 13 to represent the United States government at the match. His attendance ensures high-level federal representation at one of the most anticipated sporting events on American soil.

Trump’s absence has attracted attention because the United States is hosting the majority of matches during the expanded 48-team tournament. It has also drawn interest because Paraguayan President Santiago Peña is expected to attend the fixture involving his country’s national team.

While no official reason has been given, the development comes as the Trump administration remains heavily involved in security, immigration and visa-related preparations for the World Cup. U.S. officials have recently defended strict entry procedures amid concerns that some visitors, journalists and supporters could face difficulties obtaining visas for the tournament.

The president has repeatedly expressed support for the World Cup and has maintained close engagement with FIFA officials ahead of the competition. FIFA President Gianni Infantino has met Trump on several occasions and has praised cooperation between football authorities and the U.S. government in preparations for the event.

Analysts note that American presidents do not traditionally attend every major sporting event hosted in the country, particularly during the early stages of international tournaments. As a result, Trump’s decision to skip the opening match does not necessarily indicate a lack of interest in the competition.

The administration has not ruled out the possibility of Trump attending a later World Cup fixture. With several high-profile knockout matches and the tournament final scheduled to take place in the United States, observers believe the president could still make an appearance during a major stage of the competition.

For now, however, Rubio will serve as the face of the U.S. government at the national team’s opening World Cup match as millions of football fans around the world turn their attention to the tournament.
