Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has backed Anthony Gordon to start for England against Croatia following the Three Lions’ 3-0 victory over Costa Rica.
Gordon impressed during England’s final World Cup warm-up match, producing a goal and an assist as Thomas Tuchel’s side secured a comfortable win. His performance strengthened his claim for a place in England’s starting eleven ahead of the tournament opener.
Keane said Gordon had done enough to get the nod over Marcus Rashford on the left side of England’s attack. The former Republic of Ireland midfielder praised Gordon’s energy, directness and willingness to take responsibility in important moments.
The Newcastle winger helped create England’s opening goal, setting up Declan Rice after a strong run down the flank. He later scored from the penalty spot after Costa Rica conceded a handball.
England also had goals from Declan Rice and Ollie Watkins as Tuchel’s team completed their preparations with a convincing victory. The result gave the England manager several selection decisions to make before the Croatia match.
Gordon’s display comes at a crucial time, with Rashford also competing for a starting role in England’s attack. Keane believes Gordon’s performance against Costa Rica gives him the advantage heading into the World Cup opener.
Tuchel is expected to assess his options carefully before naming his team, but Gordon’s contribution has placed him firmly in contention for a starting place.
