Former England captain Alan Shearer has warned that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will present a different challenge from previous tournaments but believes England have the quality to emerge as champions if they approach the competition correctly.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, Shearer noted that the expanded 48-team format introduces new complexities, including a longer schedule, additional opponents, and greater demands on squad depth. He said the competition would be unlike any World Cup England have experienced before.

Despite those challenges, Shearer expressed confidence in England’s chances under manager Thomas Tuchel. According to the former Newcastle United striker, England possess one of the most talented squads in international football and have enough quality across all areas of the pitch to compete with the world’s best teams.

Shearer stressed that consistency, discipline, and effective squad management would be crucial if England are to end their long wait for a second World Cup title. He pointed out that modern tournaments are often decided by small margins and that maintaining fitness throughout the competition could prove just as important as tactical preparation.

The former striker also highlighted the importance of England’s attacking players delivering in key moments. With a squad featuring established stars and emerging talents, Shearer believes the Three Lions have the firepower needed to challenge for football’s biggest prize.

England enter the tournament among the bookmakers’ favorites, alongside traditional powerhouses such as Spain, France, Brazil, and Argentina. The Three Lions will be hoping to build on recent deep runs in major competitions and finally convert their potential into silverware.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, begins this week and marks the first edition of the tournament to feature 48 teams.
