‎Akwa Ibom State’s observance of World Heritage Day at the Tropicana Event Centre in Uyo was more than a cultural celebration, it was a strong affirmation of a growing economic vision where heritage, tourism, and development are being deliberately woven together as instruments of progress. Under the leadership of Governor Umo Eno, the state is steadily redefining culture not just as identity, but as a powerful driver of economic transformation, job creation, and global relevance.

‎The theme of the celebration, “Akwa Ibom Heritage Alive,” reflects a clear and intentional policy direction: that cultural preservation and tourism development can function as twin pillars of sustainable development. Represented by the Deputy Governor, Senator Akon Eyakenyi, Governor Eno reiterated the administration’s commitment to expanding tourism infrastructure and deepening cultural investments that position Akwa Ibom as a preferred destination for leisure, business, and investment.

‎Across the state, a series of landmark initiatives now define this ambition. The annual Christmas Unplugged festival has grown into a major tourism attraction, drawing thousands of visitors and stimulating the hospitality and creative sectors. Developments such as the Arise Palm Resort, ongoing expansion at the Tropicana Entertainment Complex, the International Convention Centre, Ibom Hotel project, Medical City, and Ibom Model Farm all reflect a coordinated strategy to build a complete tourism and lifestyle ecosystem.

‎The economic significance of this approach is profound. Tourism is one of the world’s most powerful job-creating industries, with the capacity to activate value chains across transport, agriculture, entertainment, construction, fashion, and retail. In Akwa Ibom, these investments are already expanding opportunities for young people, empowering artisans, strengthening small businesses, and stimulating private sector participation in the economy.

‎The planned strengthening of international flight operations through Victor Attah International Airport further enhances this outlook. Improved global connectivity will increase tourist inflow, attract investors, and open new markets for local products and services. Together with Ibom Air’s growing reach, Akwa Ibom is positioning itself as a regional hub for tourism, trade, and cultural exchange.

‎The presence of Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka added intellectual depth to the occasion, reinforcing the importance of preserving cultural heritage while embracing modern development. His reflections underscored the value of safeguarding identity as communities evolve, a message that aligns with Akwa Ibom’s balanced approach to development.

‎Importantly, the state’s cultural and tourism drive fits seamlessly into the broader ARISE Agenda, which prioritizes economic diversification, infrastructure expansion, agricultural development, and human capital growth. Tourism, within this framework, is not an isolated sector but a catalytic industry that enhances visibility, stimulates investment, and strengthens economic resilience.

‎Traditional institutions, cultural leaders, and creative stakeholders continue to play a vital role in sustaining this momentum, ensuring that development respects heritage while unlocking new economic opportunities. The vibrant cultural displays at the event further demonstrated that Akwa Ibom’s identity remains strong, dynamic, and globally relevant.

‎In essence, World Heritage Day in Akwa Ibom was not just a celebration of the past, it was a projection of a confident economic future. The state is deliberately converting its cultural assets into economic capital, and in doing so, strengthening its position as one of Nigeria’s most promising tourism and investment destinations.

‎With sustained investment, policy consistency, and continued innovation, Akwa Ibom’s cultural economy is on track to become a major pillar of long-term prosperity.
