The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has rejected the interpretation of a recent Court of Appeal ruling by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), accusing the electoral body of acting under pressure from the federal government.

In a statement issued on April 1, 2026, and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party alleged that INEC’s position reflects a response to growing opposition momentum rather than a fair reading of the court’s decision.

The ADC claimed that the electoral commission’s interpretation was inconsistent with the facts and described it as contradictory. The party further argued that INEC had effectively aligned itself with the government at a time when opposition parties were facing mounting challenges.

According to the statement, the party believes the government is unsettled by what it described as the ADC’s rising political influence across the country. It also accused the administration of attempting to weaken opposition parties and steer Nigeria toward a one-party system.

The ADC stated that it would publicly address what it called inconsistencies in INEC’s interpretation and provide clarifications to the Nigerian public in due course.

“We reject INEC’s interpretation of the Court of Appeal ruling,” the statement read. “INEC’s press statement is full of contradictions that fly in the face of both facts and reason. What is clear, however, is that INEC has caved to pressure and has chosen to side with the government against the Nigerian people.”

The party added that it is currently reviewing its options and will announce its next steps soon.

It also called on its members and supporters to remain calm and steadfast while awaiting further directives, emphasizing that developments are still unfolding.

The exchange underscores rising political tensions ahead of future electoral cycles, with opposition parties increasingly scrutinizing the role and independence of electoral institutions.
