Gunmen have reportedly attacked a church service in Kwara State, abducting several worshippers during a Sunday morning service in what authorities have described as a disturbing escalation of insecurity in the region.
The incident occurred at an Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) congregation in Omugo, located in the Ifelodun Local Government Area of the state. According to multiple reports, the attackers stormed the church premises during worship and fired sporadically, causing panic among congregants who fled in different directions.
Amid the chaos, a number of worshippers were taken away by the assailants. While early reports suggested that eight persons were abducted, discrepancies remain in the exact number of victims, with some accounts indicating a higher figure.
In a positive development, at least three of the abducted victims were said to have escaped from their captors shortly after the attack, while efforts are ongoing to secure the release of others still in captivity.
The Kwara State Government has confirmed the incident and condemned the attack on the place of worship. In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Communications, Bolanle Olukoju, the government described the development as deeply troubling and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.
Authorities commended the swift response of security operatives, local vigilantes, and forest guards, noting that their intervention contributed to the rescue of some victims. Ongoing operations, including intensified surveillance and forest combing exercises, are currently underway to track down the perpetrators and rescue those still held.
Security agencies have also called for increased collaboration with local communities to strengthen intelligence gathering and prevent further attacks.
The incident adds to a growing pattern of security challenges affecting parts of Nigeria, particularly in rural communities where armed groups have increasingly targeted vulnerable locations, including religious gatherings.
Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, as the state government reiterates its commitment to restoring peace and stability in affected areas.
