Togo is seeking to increase electricity imports from Nigeria as rising domestic demand continues to stretch its national grid, following high-level discussions between the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) and Compagnie Energie Electrique du Togo (CEET).

The meeting, which focused on strengthening cross-border energy cooperation, comes at a time when Togo’s electricity consumption is growing steadily due to increased urbanization, industrial activity, and expanded access to power for households.

CEET currently receives approximately 75 megawatt-hours of electricity from Nigeria under existing supply arrangements. However, officials at the Togolese utility have expressed the need for additional capacity to support a growing customer base and improve overall energy reliability nationwide.

During the discussions, NDPHC signaled its readiness to boost electricity supply to Togo, highlighting Nigeria’s capacity under the National Integrated Power Projects (NIPP) framework. The company, however, emphasized that any expansion of supply would be contingent on establishing sustainable, bankable payment structures.

Industry observers note that Nigeria remains a key electricity exporter within the West African Power Pool (WAPP), supplying power to neighboring countries including Benin, Niger, and Togo. These cross-border energy arrangements are seen as critical to regional integration and economic development.

However, concerns around payment defaults and liquidity challenges in the power sector have continued to shape Nigeria’s cautious approach to international electricity transactions. NDPHC’s insistence on secure payment guarantees reflects broader efforts to ensure financial sustainability within the sector.

For Togo, increasing electricity imports is part of a broader strategy to stabilize power supply, reduce outages, and support economic growth. The country has made progress in expanding energy access in recent years, but demand continues to outpace domestic generation capacity.

The outcome of the ongoing negotiations between both parties is expected to play a significant role in determining the future of bilateral energy cooperation between Nigeria and Togo.
