Teachers in Oyo State have gathered in Ibadan for their annual Solemn Assembly, offering prayers for peace, security, and improved welfare for educators across the state.
The event, organised by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Oyo State Wing, brought together education stakeholders, union leaders, and teachers from across the state to commit the affairs of the union and the education sector into God’s hands.

Speaking during the assembly held at the NUT headquarters in Ibadan, the union’s state chairman, Comrade Raji Oladimeji, urged teachers to remain steadfast in prayer for the union’s leadership and the continued progress of Oyo State.
According to Oladimeji, the annual gathering was designed to bring the union’s leadership and members closer to God and to seek divine guidance for the teaching profession.
“We pray to God to lead us and teach us what we need to know and what we need to do. We are here today to surrender our petitions to the Lord. We believe He will hear us, and our demands will come to pass,” he said.
The NUT chairman also revealed that ongoing efforts were being made to improve the welfare of teachers in Oyo State, expressing confidence in the commitment of Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration to strengthening teachers’ welfare and improving the education sector.
He commended key government agencies, including the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (OYOSUBEB), the Oyo State Post Primary Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), and the Ministry of Education, for prioritising teachers’ welfare in the state.
Oladimeji also praised the National President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Comrade Audu Titus Amba, for his advocacy for improved working conditions and better welfare packages for teachers across Nigeria.
He encouraged teachers to serve as role models to their students and to seek divine guidance in carrying out their responsibilities.
During the programme, religious leaders delivered sermons highlighting the critical role teachers play in shaping society.
Pastor Mrs. Margaret ‘Dayo Akinrinde of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Oyo Province 2, and Comrade Alhaji Haroon Lawal, a retired Permanent Secretary, described teachers as “shepherds of our generation,” noting that they dedicate their lives to nurturing and guiding young minds.
The solemn assembly featured Quranic and Biblical readings and special prayers for teachers, union leaders, and the Nigerian workforce.
As part of the programme, the union also distributed welfare materials to teachers across the 33 local government areas of Oyo State.
The items, which included customised clothing materials and other welfare packages, were presented to NUT leaders for distribution to teachers in recognition of their contributions to the education sector.
The event attracted teachers and education officials from across the state and concluded with prayers for peace, progress, and improved working conditions for educators in Nigeria.
