A 65-year-old woman in Livermore, California, has fallen victim to a deceptive street-level scam after a suspect posing as a friendly stranger stole her gold bracelet under the guise of prayer.
According to Livermore Police, the incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon at a business located in the 1600 block of North Vasco Road.
The victim reported that a woman approached her from a car and asked if she could pray with her. During the interaction, the suspect reportedly held the victim’s hands and placed what appeared to be gold jewelry on her wrist.
Shortly after the suspect drove away, the woman realized her real gold bracelet had been removed and replaced with replica jewelry.
With assistance from the Livermore Police Department’s Real Time Awareness Center, officers were able to track the suspect vehicle to the 4000 block of Las Positas Road.
Police arrested Cristina Dinu, 24, of Baltimore, on charges of grand theft. The driver of the vehicle, Fernando Miclescu, 29, of Renton, Washington, was also taken into custody in connection with the incident.
Police Warning: Be Alert to “Prayer Scams”
Law enforcement officials say this method — often referred to as a “prayer or blessing scam” — has been reported in several cities and typically targets elderly victims.
Residents are advised to remain cautious, especially in public spaces such as parking lots and shopping areas.
Safety tips from police include:
- Keep your distance from strangers who approach unexpectedly
- Do not allow anyone to touch you or place items on your body
- Trust your instincts and walk away if something feels suspicious
- Take note of vehicle descriptions and direction of travel
Anyone who believes they may have been targeted is urged to contact local police immediately.
Authorities say timely reporting helps prevent repeat attacks and protects other members of the community.
