Governor Umo Eno’s latest warning to his aides about loyalty has stirred conversations across Akwa Ibom. It is natural for a governor to expect unity in his team. No administration can function properly when people inside the government house are working against the goals of the same government that pays them.

But as the Governor talks about loyalty, he must also confront the truth many citizens are whispering: he has not always shown that same loyalty to the political structure that brought him into office. The PDP family that defended him, funded him, and stood solidly behind him during the difficult days of his emergence has, at times, felt pushed aside. So when he lectures aides about standing with him, people naturally ask whether he himself has stood faithfully with those who stood for him.

There is also something important the Governor must understand. Working in government does not remove a person’s right to think. Benefitting from the system does not erase objectivity. Aides must be able to speak honestly without fear. Honest counsel is not betrayal. It is part of good leadership.

However, what is raising the most concern is the Governor’s growing habit of mixing political discipline with lengthy biblical warnings. Akwa Ibom is a diverse state. It is not a church, and public servants are not members of a congregation. When scriptures are used to push political alignment, it begins to feel like spiritual pressure rather than public policy. That is not the right direction for a modern democracy.

Governor Eno is a pastor by calling, and nobody can take that away from him. His moral values are respected. But the office he occupies demands a clear separation between church and state. When political instructions are wrapped in religious language, it creates fear, not unity. It divides people instead of strengthening the government.

He has achieved meaningful progress in other areas. Clearing a huge portion of the gratuity backlog is commendable. Ensuring stable labour relations is no small feat. The civil service reforms under his watch are also visible. These are accomplishments that deserve recognition.

Even so, the Governor needs a reset in his approach. He must lead with fairness, not pressure. He must welcome constructive criticism, not silence it. And he must stop turning government communications into sermons. People want clarity, not spiritual intimidation.

A good leader knows when personal convictions should step aside for public duty. Governor Umo Eno can strengthen his government simply by drawing a clean boundary between his pastoral background and his constitutional responsibilities. Akwa Ibom needs a governor, not a preacher in government house.

He has the potential to strike that balance. The question is whether he will choose to do so.
