SAN FRANCISCO, CA — New details have emerged about the tragic deaths of a San Francisco family of four whose bodies were discovered inside their home at 930 Monterey Boulevard on October 8. Autopsy findings reported by the San Francisco Chronicle and SF Gate confirm the case is officially being treated as a murder-suicide.
According to the reports, 57-year-old Thomas Ocheltree, 12-year-old Alexandra Ocheltree, and 9-year-old Mackenzie Ocheltree all died from gunshot wounds. Their mother, 53-year-old Paula Truong, was found hanging in the garage.
Although Truong was not shot, investigators detected gunshot residue on her body. The reports further state that Ocheltree was discovered holding a pistol but had gunshot wounds to his neck and chest. Alexandra and Mackenzie showed signs of having ingested sedative-type medications before being shot in the upper body.
Authorities say the exact motive remains unclear, though earlier Chronicle reporting indicated the family may have been experiencing financial hardship.
The San Francisco Police Department has not provided new comments and previously stated the tragedy appeared to be an isolated incident with no threat to the wider public.
National analysts note that this case reflects a disturbing pattern of “family annihilation”—a term used to describe situations where a family member kills close relatives. A 2023 investigation by the Indianapolis Star found that such cases have risen since 2020, often involving intimate-partner violence or severe family stressors.
The families in these tragedies differ, but the pattern is consistent: parents killing spouses and children, young adults killing parents or siblings, and, in rare cases, couples acting together.
Authorities are urging anyone dealing with emotional or financial distress in the Bay Area to reach out to local support lines and crisis centers.
