In commemoration of the 2025 World Teachersโ Day, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirant in Ekiti State, Otunba Olugbenga Peter Obafemi, has called on the state government to urgently recruit more teachers and embark on a comprehensive review of teachersโ welfare across public schools in the state.
Obafemi, who made the remarks on Sunday, emphasized that โthe foundation of any progressive society rests on the quality of its teachers.โ He expressed concern over the recent poor performance of Ekiti students in external examinations, stressing that token celebrations without real reforms will not improve educational outcomes.
โWe cannot continue to celebrate teachers once a year while leaving their genuine needs unattended. They need steady motivation, regular training, and fair compensation to deliver effectively,โ Obafemi said.
The PDP aspirant criticized the governmentโs handling of the education sector despite what he described as improved internally generated revenue and increased federal allocation, saying there is no justification for the ongoing neglect.
โIf we truly want to restore Ekitiโs pride as the land of honour and learning, then investment in teachers must be a top priority,โ he added.
He further urged the government to ensure prompt salary payments, adopt modern teaching tools, and introduce performance-based incentives to reward excellence in the teaching profession.
โOur teachers are nation builders; if they are not supported, the nationโs future will continue to falter,โ Obafemi stated.
Reaffirming his commitment to transforming education in Ekiti State, Obafemi said his vision is to develop policies that place teachers at the heart of learning outcomes, noting that โEkiti must once again become a reference point for quality education in Nigeria. It begins with valuing our teachers through action.โ
Newspot Nigeria reports that the statement reflects Obafemiโs broader campaign focus on human capital development and educational reform in Ekiti State.
