The ancient city of Ibadan is set for a historic celebration as Senator Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, former governor of Oyo State, ascends the throne as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland on Friday, September 26, 2025.
The coronation, which will take place at the iconic Mapo Hall grounds, is expected to draw dignitaries from across Nigeria and beyond. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will be among the high-profile guests, joining Yoruba monarchs, state governors, members of the diplomatic corps, captains of industry, and thousands of Ibadan indigenes from home and abroad.
Chief Bayo Oyero, Chairman of the Planning and Organizing Committee, described the event as “a momentous cultural and traditional milestone” that goes beyond Ibadan, symbolizing Yoruba heritage and African pride. He revealed that the week-long celebration will begin on Monday, September 22, with an interdenominational service at the Olubadan Palace, Oke Aremo, organized by the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII).
Other activities include a cultural fiesta at Olubadan Stadium on Tuesday, September 23; a coronation lecture by world-renowned scholar, Prof. Toyin Falola, at the University of Ibadan on Wednesday, September 24; and a mega praise and worship concert on Thursday, September 25, which coincides with Oba Ladoja’s 81st birthday. The grand coronation will hold on Friday, September 26, followed by a Thanksgiving service at Catholic Cathedral, Oke Padre, on Sunday, September 28, and a Jumat service at Ojaba Central Mosque on Friday, October 3, to formally close the celebrations.
To ensure a hitch-free event, the Oyo State Government announced that over 2,000 security operatives from the Police, Civil Defence, DSS, Amotekun Corps, and OYRTMA will be deployed. The coronation will also be broadcast live on national television, radio, and streamed across social media platforms for the diaspora community.
In addition, Fuji stars Saheed Osupa, Taye Currency, and a host of Ibadan’s indigenous musicians will thrill guests with electrifying performances, showcasing the city’s vibrant musical heritage.
Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Otunba Ademola Ojo, praised Governor Seyi Makinde for his “timely release of funds, moral support, and respect for Ibadan tradition,” noting that this is the first time a non-government official would chair the coronation planning committee—an uncommon step credited to Makinde’s leadership.
The coronation of Oba Ladoja, an engineer, businessman, administrator, and respected statesman, is seen as the dawn of a new era of peace, unity, and progress for Ibadanland.
