Fellow Nigerians,

With deep concern and a profound sense of duty to our democratic future, I urge us all to reject a growing, disturbing trend—the automatic recycling of outgoing state governors into the Nigerian Senate. This practice, now dangerously normalized, represents a distortion of the spirit of democratic renewal and a mockery of representative governance.

The Nigerian Senate is not meant to be a political retirement home. It is a critical institution envisioned to serve the national interest, driven by fresh ideas, visionary legislation, and principled leadership. Yet today, it is becoming a haven for political continuity by those who have already held the highest office in their states for eight years—often with debatable legacies.

This trend undermines the very essence of democracy. It suggests that our country lacks capable, younger, and more dynamic citizens who can take the reins of legislative leadership. It pushes aside our youth, women, professionals, and technocrats—those with new energy and untapped ideas—just to make room for the same circle of entrenched elites.

We must ask a critical question: What more does a two-term governor have to offer in the Senate that he could not offer during eight years as the most powerful figure in his state? In far too many cases, they leave behind states burdened with debt, dilapidated infrastructure, unpaid workers, and a disappointed citizenry. Yet, they arrive at the National Assembly not as repentant statesmen, but as strategists seeking relevance, immunity, and insulation from accountability.

Let us be honest—many of these former governors do not pursue Senate seats to legislate for the common good. They seek to shield themselves from investigation, preserve political influence, and continue drawing public funds under a different title. This is not conjecture—it is an observable pattern. And we must call it out.

The time has come for Nigerians to raise the bar. We must demand a higher standard of leadership—one rooted in performance, integrity, and the courage to step aside when one’s time is up. We must break this cycle of failure, impunity, and entitlement.

The 2027 elections must not be business as usual. They must be a declaration that the old ways are no longer acceptable. Let us rise with one voice and proclaim:

🔹 No more recycled politicians.

🔹 No more Senate seats as retirement benefits.

🔹 No more protecting the failed with fresh mandates.

Let the Senate be filled with bold reformers, independent minds, and truly representative Nigerians—not just former governors looking for a soft landing.

The message is simple: Nigeria deserves better. Our democracy deserves better. And the Nigerian people deserve the opportunity to be represented by leaders who serve, not those who hide.

Let us open the door to fresh voices. Let us reclaim the Senate for the people.
