Opinion: By Haruna Sardauna, Yobe,
As I reflect on the legacy of General Sani Abacha, I am compelled to acknowledge the significant contributions he made to Nigeria’s development. While some may attempt to tarnish his reputation, I believe it is essential to set the record straight and honor his memory.
As a concerned citizen, I respond to the misrepresentation of facts and the unwarranted blame heaped on General Sani Abacha in IBB recently launched memoir, “A Journey in Service”. It is time for Nigerians to reevaluate General Abacha’s legacy and recognize his contributions to the country’s development. We must not allow his legacy to be tarnished by false accusations and misrepresentations.
Firstly, I must express my respect for General Ibrahim Babangida, who created my home state, Yobe, in 1991. This is undoubtedly one of his most notable legacies, and I appreciate his role in shaping the state’s history. He really deserves my respect at all cost.
As a good Nigeria citizens, we have a responsibility to protect our history and ensure that it is not distorted for personal gain. The recent memoir by General Ibrahim Babangida, which attempts to shift the blame for the annulment of the June 12, 1993, election to General Sani Abacha, is a clear example of this distortion.
The facts are clear: General Abacha was not the mastermind behind the annulment. As IBB Chief of Defence Staff, he was a loyal and dedicated officer who carried out his duties to the best of his abilities. The decision to annul the election was a collective one, taken by the military high command, and General Abacha was merely a part of that process.
However, I must strongly disagree with any attempts to blame General Abacha for various issues, particularly the annulment of the June 12, 1993, election. As someone who has studied Nigeria’s history, I believe it is unfair to shift the blame to Abacha, who is not alive to protect himself.
We must reject this blatant attempt to rewrite history and instead stand up for the truth. The facts are clear: General Babangida was the Commander-in-Chief at the time of the annulment, and he authorized the national broadcast that announced the cancellation of the election results.
General Abacha’s legacy is often misunderstood and misrepresented. Despite his flaws, he took power in 1993 with the goal of stabilizing Nigeria and restoring economic growth. During his rule, he implemented policies that led to significant economic growth, reduced inflation, and increased foreign reserves.
Economically, Abacha achieved impressive feats. He grew Nigeria’s foreign reserves from a mere $494 million to $9.6 billion, a staggering increase of over 1,800%. Additionally, he reduced the country’s debt from $36 billion to $27 billion, all while navigating the challenges of low oil prices, which averaged around $15 per barrel during his tenure. One of Abacha’s most notable achievements was his success in curbing inflation. When he took office, inflation was a staggering 54%. However, through his economic policies, he managed to bring it down to 8.5%, a remarkable reduction of over 84%.
In my opinion, General Abacha was the best leader Nigeria has had. He sacrificed his life for the country’s success and survival, and his legacy in protecting Nigeria’s integrity should not be forgotten. Abacha’s commitment to Nigeria’s development is evident in his policies and programs, which had a positive impact on the country.
One of Abacha’s notable achievements was the creation of the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria in 1993. This has facilitated governance, administration, and economic development, making it easier for the government to allocate resources and provide services to the people.
It is unacceptable for General Babangida to now claim that General Abacha was the mastermind behind the annulment. This is a clear attempt to deflect responsibility and avoid accountability for his own actions. We call on all Nigerians to stand up against this distortion of history and demand the truth. We must reject General Babangida’s attempt to shift the blame for the annulment of the June 12 election and instead hold him accountable for his actions.
Let us come together to protect our history and ensure that it is not distorted for personal gain. We owe it to ourselves, our children, and future generations to stand up for the truth and defend our legacy.
