The creation of new dioceses in the Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion will have to wait, as the leadership, under the Most Revd Henry Ndukuba, stated that “Work Still in Progress” after reviewing the interim reports from the three Supra Regions.
Expectations were high among delegates at the biannual Standing Committee Meeting in Port Harcourt for a definitive decision on the matter. However, the Primate emphasized that any new diocese must withstand the test of time.
Two leaders from the three Supra Regions, Most Revd Joseph Akinfenwa of Supra West and Most Rev’d Dr. David O. Onuoha of Supra East, presented their interim reports to the assembly. They recommended several applicants who had successfully navigated the inspection and verification processes for full-fledged dioceses. Notably, the Primate of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, inaugurated the Teams on Inspection and Verification for the creation of full-fledged dioceses on Friday, 14th June 2024.
Most Revd Akinfenwa provided a well-documented report, awarding passing marks to four applicants:
1. Oyo South at Akinmorin
2. Oyun at Erin-Ile, Kwara
3. Idanre
4. Ekiti South Ikere.
Meanwhile, Most Revd Onuoha presented a detailed report recommending at least two applicants ready to become full-fledged dioceses.
The leader of Supra North, Most Revd Daniel Yisa, could not present his report as he was on a short recess.
The reports from Akinfenwa and Onuoha were well received by the delegates, with no objection raised. It is noteworthy that the resolution to create these three teams was made at the General Synod of the Church in September 2023 in Nnewi, Anambra State, and the teams were inaugurated on 14th June 2024. The Primate needs final authenticity of the applicants claims to be sure they are real.
