The Osun State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced an indefinite withdrawal of services by all local government workers, effective from Monday, February 17, 2025. This decision reflects growing concerns over the safety and security of workers amidst the ongoing political tensions in the state.
In an official statement, Comrade Christopher Arapasopo, representing the NLC, highlighted the increasing political unrest across various local government areas. The NLC emphasized that it cannot allow its members to operate in an insecure environment, underscoring its commitment to the safety and welfare of workers.
The political crisis is rooted in accusations from Governor Ademola Adeleke against his predecessor, Adegboyega Oyetola, who is accused of attempting to incite violence by reinstating local government officials elected in the controversial October 2022 polls. Governor Adeleke has called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene and halt actions that could disrupt peace in the region.
On the other hand, Kola Olabisi, spokesperson for the Osun APC, advised Governor Adeleke to address the matter through the Supreme Court instead of making allegations against Oyetola, who now serves as the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy. Olabisi refuted claims of inciting violence and accused Adeleke of trying to tarnish Oyetola’s image.
The NLC has reiterated its apolitical stance, urging all political parties to adhere to the rule of law to prevent a descent into anarchy. The organization has also called upon security agencies to ensure the protection of lives and properties within the state, stating that workers will not return until their safety is fully assured.
As tensions continue to rise in Osun State, the NLC’s directive underscores the critical need for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing political disputes.
