An All Progressives Congress, APC Chieftain, Paul Chukwuma has expressed unhappiness over the killing of a lecturer of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Dr Osita Chinedu, tasking Governor Chukwuma Soludo to sit up and secure the state.
Chinedu was on Monday gunned down by armed robbers when he resisted their attempt to hijack his car for an operation.
Chukwuma has been very vocal in condemning the spate of insecurity in Anambra State.
Last weekend, he had called on Soludo to sit up and secure the state, or quit his position as governor.
In a statement condemning the killing of Chinedu, which was signed by the spokesperson of his Campaign Council, Mr James Eze and made available to journalists in Awka, Chukwuma said he was traumatised by the tragic death.
He said the slain lecturer was a brilliant young man who had shown great promise as a scholar of note and whose talent would have enriched the academia had he not been cut down in his prime.
He added, “Chinedu carried not only the hopes of his family but the dreams of his country, and the death of any human being diminishes me but the death of a teacher is a colossal loss to humanity.
“Human beings are the agents of civilization and should be prioritized over physical development. Every responsible government should know this.
“We should all be worried at the ease with which criminals carry out their operations in our dear state. How could violent criminals gun down a citizen at the strategically busy Aroma Junction in the heart of Awka and escape without any challenge at all? Is that not a blow to our pride as a decent people?
“My thoughts and prayers are with the family in this moment of grief. May God grant them the fortitude to bear this great loss.”
He challenged the APGA government in the state to sit up for once and prioritise the safety and security of Ndi Anambra over and above grand rhetoric and tenuous claims to building roads and bridges.
“Roads and bridges are for the living, not the dead. The sooner we realise this, the better for us all, because maybe the huge security votes drawn from the coffers of Anambra State shall finally be invested in securing public safety for all.”
He decried the worsening insecurity in the state, saying the freedom enjoyed by criminal elements in the state had become unacceptable.
