Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Kudirat Kekere-Ekun delivered heartfelt reflections on the inevitability of life’s end, urging Nigerians to live with integrity and respect for divine accountability.

Speaking at a valedictory session in Abuja to honor the late Supreme Court Justice Emmanuel Olayinka Ayoola, who passed away on August 20, 2024, the CJN praised his lasting contributions to the judiciary.

Describing death as “a mandatory call of nature,” the CJN encouraged all Nigerians to approach life with a strong sense of duty and godliness. Recalling Shakespeare’s notion of life as a stage, she honored Justice Ayoola for playing his many roles with discipline, intellect, and a powerful dedication to fairness. Justice Ayoola, she noted, was a man who courageously and thoughtfully engaged in judicial service, advancing the legal profession and upholding justice over five decades.

Justice Ayoola, born in Ilesha, Osun State, in 1933, was a renowned judge who served not only in Nigeria but also held esteemed positions abroad, including as Chief Justice of The Gambia and President of the Seychelles Court of Appeal. Known for his clarity and innovation in judgments, he advocated for straightforward and logical reasoning in his rulings. His peers likened him to Lord Denning of the English Bench for his eloquence, precision, and courage.

Justice Ayoola’s legacy includes his leadership as Chairman of Nigeria’s Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and contributions to Nigeria’s legal reform efforts. His exemplary service in various judicial capacities left an indelible mark on the judiciary. As his colleagues bid him farewell, they remembered him as an iconic jurist who lived fully by the principles he cherished.
