Obi-Martin emerged as one of the best young strikers at youth level in England, scoring 32 goals in 18 matches for Arsenal’s Under-18s, which included 10 in one game against Liverpool.
The Dane left Arsenal this summer having failed to agree terms on a new scholarship deal and was wanted by several top European clubs, including Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.
However, the teenager has decided to stay in the Premier League and sign with United who agreed to double the wages that were on offer at Arsenal.
Obi-Martin is also said to have chosen a move to Old Trafford after discussions with Ruud van Nistelrooy who personally spoke with the striker about his potential pathway to the first team.
The striker joins the club’s first-year scholars, alongside fellow new signings Samuel Lusale and James Overy who joined from Perth Glory and Crystal Palace respectively.
‘We welcome Samuel Lusale, Chido Obi-Martin and James Overy to the club,’ Nick Cox, Manchester United’s academy director, said. ‘All three young players will join up with our professional development phase as they adjust to life in Manchester and become acquainted with their new team-mates.
‘It can be a difficult process for some players, while others slot right in. Whatever the scenario, our staff will be on hand to care for these young boys and make sure their experience at the academy is an overwhelmingly positive one that sets them up for life.
‘Good to luck to Samuel, Chido and James, well done to our recruitment team and congratulations to the families and wider support networks involved in these boys’ journeys.
‘Signing for Manchester United should be a proud day for everyone involved.’
Announcing the move on his Instagram, Obi-Martin said: ‘Very happy to sign with this amazing club, time to focus and achieve all my dreams.
‘Thanks to everyone who has helped me get this far.’
The striker is expected to go straight into United’s Under-18 side but could also feature for the Under-21s.
Obi-Martin marks the second Arsenal academy player to join United this summer, with talented goalkeeper Hubert Graczyk also making the switch to Old Trafford.
