Sky Sports F1’s Martin Brundle had yet another awkward grid walk encounter before the British Grand Prix – this time with a new Labour minister.
Brundle’s pre-race gridwalks are part of F1 legend, with the former driver turned pundit interviewing celebrities and drivers in the final few minutes before racing gets underway.
Over the years, he’s made headlines after awkward encounters with celebs who have no interest in chatting, most notably at last year’s British Grand Prix with Cara Delevingne.
But on the grid ahead of Sunday’s race at Silverstone it was a famous person who wanted to speak to Brundle that had fans cringing.
Brundle, who began his gridwalk telling the camera: ‘Let’s try to not get in trouble today,’ made pleasant chat with the likes of Jeremy Clarkson, Chris Hoy, Mary Earps, Mo Farah, Rowan Atkinson, Stuart Broad and Sam Ryder.
But as he was doing his rounds, he was intercepted by a government aide who insisted he interview the new Secretary of State for Science Peter Kyle.
Kyle introduced himself to Brundle, revealing he’d be presenting the winners trophy and sharing his enthusiasm for F1, saying he’d watched on from Club corner as a fan for the last few years.
While it was nice to see some enthusiasm from a ‘celebrity’ on the grid, Brundle couldn’t wait to move on from the Labour politician as quickly as possible and quickly hurried away to continue the gridwalk.
Later, he twice attempted to interview Brian May but was twice rejected by the Queen legend, though Brundle took it in good grace.
‘He [May] says he doesn’t know enough about Formula One [to do an interview],’ Brundle said walking away.
‘I respect that. He doesn’t want to stand there and pretend that he does. That’s absolutely fine.’
Fans at home were still cringing from the Kyle encounter however, with @ffcwhodat posting on Twitter: ‘Martin Brundle being chased down pit lane by some Labour minister trying to get on tv, Brian May was more interesting.’
Alex Tiffin wrote: ‘Peter Kyle was way too eager to talk to Martin Brundle. Just very weird.’
‘Proper cringe that Labour minister for something or other trying to force his way into an interview with Martin Brundle,’ @harryxafc added.
