England international Brydon Carse has been hit with a ban after being found to have placed hundreds of bets on cricket from 2017-19.

The 28-year-old was handed a 16-month ban by the Cricket Regulator, although 13 months of that punishment is suspended for two years, meaning he will be eligible for selection again on 28 August.

The Durham bowler, who has played 14 ODIs and three T20Is for England, said: ‘Whilst these bets were several years ago, that is no excuse and I take full responsibility for my actions.

‘I would like to thank the ECB, Durham Cricket and the PCA for their support during this difficult time for me. I will be working hard in the next 12 weeks to ensure that I repay that support on the field when I am able to return to playing.’

An ECB spokesperson said: ‘We take these matters extremely seriously and do not condone any form of anti-corruption breach in cricket.

‘We support the Cricket Regulator’s decision and their consideration of the mitigating factors in Brydon’s case. He has co-operated and shown remorse for his actions.

‘We are satisfied that Brydon has shown growth in the five years since this breach and has demonstrated a greater understanding of his responsibilities. We are hopeful that his case can serve as an educational example for other cricketers.’

A statement from Durham CCC read: ‘Durham Cricket can confirm that, due to a historic infringement of the betting rules, Brydon Carse has been suspended from playing Cricket for three months, effective immediately.

‘Brydon will be allowed to train with the team during this period and will be available for selection for the final four games of the season.

‘Durham and Brydon accept the charges and related punishment. The Club are supporting Brydon through this time as he prepares for his return to Cricket in August.’

Cricket Regulator Statement

Following an Anti-Corruption investigation by the Cricket Regulator, Brydon Carse has been suspended from all cricket for 16 months with 13 months of that ban being suspended for two years.

Carse was charged with placing 303 bets on various cricket matches between 2017 and 2019. Carse did not place bets on games in which he was participating. He accepted the charges, cooperated with the Cricket Regulator throughout the investigation and has demonstrated significant remorse for his actions.

Other significant mitigating factors were considered by the Cricket Regulator and the Cricket Discipline Commission when determining the sanction.

Carse will be suspended from playing in any cricket between 28 May 2024 and 28 August 2024.

Provided Carse does not commit any further offences contrary to the anti-corruption rules over the next two years. he will not face any further penalties.

There was no evidence to suggest any wider integrity concerns from Carse’s actions.
