The Association of West African Universities (AWAU), has criticised the option of using military force in resolving the Niger Republic crisis, arising from the recent military takeover of democratic governance in the Francophone country.

The body called for meticulous use of dialogue rather than force in the resolution of the impasse precipitated by the unconstitutional seizure of power by a military junta in Niger Republic, in the West African sub-region.

The Association, stated this in a statement on Monday signed by its Secretary-General and Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Professor Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN.

AWAU said it was not impressed by the position of the leadership of the Economic Community of West African Countries (ECOWAS), which said that “no option is taken off the table, including the use of force as a last resort” in restoring constitutional democracy in Niger Republic.

The association expressed concern about the issue and development emanating from the landlocked country because of the possible threat to peace and security and reduction of access to education, saying that students would suffer most should war erupt in the country.

Newspot recalls that there have been several counterreactions to the use of force to reinstall democracy in the troubled landlocked Niger Republic by the 16 member countries of the Economic Community of West African States under the chairmanship of the Nigerian President, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

As part of the measures to choke the military junta in the country, which shares frontiers with Nigeria, the Federal Government of Nigeria, has cut electricity supply to the Niger Republic.

However, diplomatic efforts are ongoing to resolve the impasse and find an amicable resolution to the political crisis.
